House of Leaves Journal 2

I'm starting to think Zampano, Johnny and Johnny's mother are all the same person, or are alternate personalities of someone with multiple personality disorder. At different points in the book, they have all used the same spelling mistake...'pisces' instead of 'pieces'. Zampano does it on p.41, Jhonny's mother on p.599 and Jhonny on p.552 (the upper-left index card, which is also in the front-page collage). Also, I've noticed that all three use foreign languages often. Johnny's mother is clearly fluent in several, and it is assumed (also from her letters) that Johnny has learned different languages as well. On many occasions, Zampano has used quotes in other languages, then forgotten to footnote them, implying he understood them enough to find their sources again without needing a translator.

  1. I really agree with your theory, especially when individually considering each character. Each one falls into a pattern of insanity that seems eerily similar, not to mention their strange parallels during short periods of lucidity (or what we are told is lucidity).

  2. I think your right Naomi. I feel that the things the characters say could easily come from one person who believes they are three people. The examples that you found also back up this theory and I think thatthe characters act crazy enough that its totally possible.

  3. Excellent observation, Naomi. It would seem that all three are different versions/personalities of the same person based on some of their similarities. I'm curious about what you think about Zampano's personality in regard to his creation of the Navidson record...
