House of Leaves (Journal #2)

At this point in The House of Leaves, it seems as though the house itself is literally becoming another character. Although the flesh and blood characters seem fairly dynamic (as far as one can tell at this point in the plot) most are almost completely one dimensional, while the house itself shifts and changes at a whim, with literal depths that not even Navidson's omniscient cameras can describe.  It seems as though Zampano is beginning to hint that the house is at least somewhat sentient. Aside from the fact that the house apparently interpreted and transmitted Jed's frantic distress call. Also, Navidson believes that the house plays host to another living creature.  As the others seem to think that the growling sound that it produces is nothing more than the sound of the rooms and they change position, this may be Zampano's way of suggesting that whatever creature might be roaming the halls is actually an extension of the house itself.
