The First Impression on MAUS
The comic book MAUS draws my attention by choosing animals as the characters, which demonstrates the features of the story's social background . The mice represent the humble Jews and the cats represent the strong Germen. Even though the characters have animal faces, they act, talk, and dressed like human beings. However, I can only distinguish them by their clothing and their speech because their faces are all the same. The way that the author expresses the character's emotion is also eyecatching. For instance, the pop out photos, the shadowed figures and the Nazi flag background, they highlight the improtand details and makes it easier to connect all the information. The shift of the "camera" direction of a same pictures and the zooming in pictures give me a sense of "reading a film". In addition, different shapes of the boubles clearly distiguish the thoughts, speeches, and the asides.
