Different boxes in Maus
At first while reading Maus I never picked up on the different styles of boxes. When I started reading I just never noticed how the author used different boxes to show past events, or present events or, emphasizing certain times. I like how the author is creative in showing varied times and how even though it is a cartoon, Spiegelman uses creative ways in a change in time. I just thinks its a really interesting way of showing a change in time, and he doesn't even write about what time the event occurred, I can just look at the box type and know.I never noticed the change in boxes at first but now I pick up on the change in boxes.

Actually I didn't pay to the different boxes and the boubles until Mrs. Pritchard mentioned it in class. I agree that they help the readers understand the shift of the time and situations. I think this is an advantage of comics to use pictures so that the author actually presents a visual sense to the readers.
ReplyDeleteI love the way that Spiegelman emphasizes different things with the different shapes of the boxes. My personal favorites are the dining room window on page 74 (with the panes which look like individual panels themselves), and the panel in the shape of the Jewish star, which frames Vladek on page 80.
