I'm extremely fascinated with Zampano's claim that the house itself does not 'shift' at random intervals, but rather to suit the perception and subconscious of those who enter it. However, I'm even more intrigued by the fact that the creature that lurks within its hallways seems to do the exact opposite.  It not only herds and pursues those who enter its territory, it often manages to drive them to insanity and actually affect their conscious and subconscious states. We see early on that this creature, regardless of its debatable corporeality, haunts Johnny, Zampano, and even Navidson until it manages to drive them to further depths of insanity, just as it physically drives Holloway and his team further into the house. It also manages to lure Holloway not only away from the safety of his companions and the territory that they have tentatively begun to claim, but eventually to the murder of one of his friends.
If Zampano is to be believed, the house itself remains a slave to the subconscious of those who enter it, despite their lack of control of its twists and turns. However, the monster within is actually capable of acting upon those inside. While the characters cannot purposely conquer the house as a whole, or even successfully navigate it, I find it extremely interesting that what they fear the most retains the capability to actively influence others.
