House of Leaves Journal 3

Starting on page 296, Johnny uses the SOS distress signal repeatedly, which I think indicates his current (crazy) state of mind. The SOS signal is written in morse code as [...
_ _ _ ...] and is sent as three short taps, followed by three long taps, ending with three short taps. Johnny's footnote symbol is an elliptical [...] suggesting that his following narrative is one big distress signal. The story itself is about a shipping disaster, and it includes several groupings of 'SOS' throughout, which gives the entire piece a very desperate feel.
